Building Service Worker (BSW) Certificate in BC: What It Is and How to Get Trained

The short answer: A Building Service Worker (BSW) certificate shows that a person has been trained and tested in professional commercial cleaning. In British Columbia it is often a required or preferred qualification for custodial jobs with school boards, recreation centres, institutions and cleaning companies. The entry-level course, BSW 1, takes 16 to 28 hours and ends with written and practical exams.

What is a Building Service Worker?

Building Service Worker is the term used in BC for a trained custodian or janitor: the person responsible for cleaning and maintaining schools, offices, recreation centres, health facilities and other commercial or public buildings. The work covers far more than emptying bins. A building service worker handles cleaning chemicals, operates floor equipment, follows safety procedures and makes daily decisions about surfaces and soils.

Who asks for a BSW certificate?

The BSW Level 1 certificate is often a prerequisite or preferred qualification for employment with school boards, recreation centres, institutions and private cleaning companies. School district custodian postings in BC, for example, have listed a Building Service Worker certificate among their required qualifications. Employers also use BSW training to bring existing custodial and janitorial staff up to one shared standard.

What is in the BSW 1 course?

BSW 1 is the foundation. It introduces the skills needed to work in the building service custodial field:

  • WHMIS/GHS and chemical safety, including chemical measuring
  • Blood-borne pathogens and sharps, hantavirus safety, safe lifting and general safety
  • Basic cleaning chemistry, detergents and the pH scale
  • Office, classroom, washroom and common area cleaning
  • Hard floor care: sweeping, dust mopping, damp mopping and wet mopping
  • Vacuuming, trash handling, glass and mirror cleaning
  • Inspections and supervision

The format is about 85% in-class instruction, including practical demonstrations and training videos, and 15% hands-on practice. Course length runs from 16 to 28 hours, depending on whether WHMIS is included and other factors.

WHMIS is the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, Canada’s system for providing health and safety information on hazardous products used at work, as described by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. In British Columbia, WorkSafeBC states that employers are responsible for ensuring their workers are trained and educated in WHMIS, which is one reason it is a topic in BSW 1.

How do you get a BSW certificate?

Students who successfully complete BSW 1, including the written and skills demonstration exams, receive a BSW Level 1 Certificate. There are two routes to a seat:

  • Through your employer or organization. Servitech brings the course to your facility anywhere in British Columbia and adapts it to your team, your building and your procedures. Request training to arrange it.
  • Through a hosting organization. Some organizations host courses that are open to individuals. Registration and payment are handled by the host, not by Servitech. See training locations.

Why BSW training matters to employers

Most cleaning problems are training problems. Staff who understand why a procedure works use less chemical, protect floors and finishes, work more safely and can tell when something has gone wrong. That is the difference between a team that follows a checklist and a team that can be trusted with a building. Our articles on common commercial cleaning mistakes, choosing the right cleaning product and why floor finish fails show what that knowledge looks like in practice.
